The name

The Sanskrit word ānvīkṣikī (आन्वीक्षिकी) means the science of critical inquiry — the discipline of examining what is presented, rather than accepting it at face value.

In the Arthaśāstra, Kauṭilya lists ānvīkṣikī as the first of the four vidyās — the foundational discipline on which the other three (scripture, economics, statecraft) depend. It is not a subject among subjects. It is the lamp by which subjects are examined.

Ideas, decisions, disciplines, and lives become intelligible not in isolation but through careful inquiry — through examining what is actually there, rather than what appears to be there.

Anviksiki is named after this principle. Most confusion does not arise because information is missing. It arises because what is present has not been examined carefully enough.

A question accepted at face value remains opaque. Pursued through inference, its structure becomes visible. Seen in structure, it yields insight — not because something new was added, but because what was always there became intelligible.

Gödel showed, through mathematics, that no formal system can fully account for its own truth. Heisenberg's uncertainty is not a limitation of measurement but a statement about the nature of reality. Einstein's special relativity turned on a deceptively simple question: what does it mean to say that two events happen at the same time?

The sciences do not merely lead to philosophy. Pursued deeply enough, they arrive there.

The same movement appears elsewhere. In the seventh century, the philosopher Prabhākara Miśra argued that words acquire meaning not in isolation but through their relation to one another (anvitābhidhānavāda). Twelve hundred years later, the attention mechanism — the architecture on which all of today's AI systems are built — arrived independently at the same structural insight: meaning is not carried by isolated units but computed entirely from their relations to one another.

Jyotisha, approached in the same spirit, becomes less a system of prediction than a symbolic coordinate system. Its many parameters permit multiple perspectives on the same person, much as redundancy in error-correcting codes allows consistency to be checked from different directions. Used this way, it becomes a framework for inquiry.

The boundaries between disciplines are conveniences of administration, not features of reality. Physics, mathematics, philosophy, computing, and Vedic thought are not separate rooms. They are different faces of one inquiry.
